Why Members Don't Read Your Newsletter (And How to Fix It)

Member Engagement

The biggest misconception in association communications is believing members don't read newsletters anymore. They do — they just don't read ones that fail to answer one question: why does this matter to me?

One of the biggest misconceptions in association communications is believing members don't read newsletters anymore.

They do.

They just don't read newsletters that fail to answer one question:

"Why does this matter to me?"

Every member is busy. They're running projects, managing employees, solving problems, serving customers, and trying to grow their business. They aren't looking for more emails to read. They're looking for information that helps them make better decisions, save time, reduce risk, or discover opportunities.

Too often, newsletters become collections of announcements instead of tools that deliver value.

Instead of leading with what's most important to members, we often lead with what happened internally.

That subtle difference changes everything.

Before You Send Your Next Newsletter, Ask Yourself

  • Would this subject line make me stop and open it?
  • Does the first article immediately communicate value?
  • Does every story help a member solve a problem, learn something new, or take advantage of an opportunity?
  • Am I writing from the chapter's perspective — or the member's?

When organizations consistently communicate through the lens of member value, engagement follows.

Members don't join associations because they want more emails.

They join because they want access to opportunities, information, relationships, and resources that help them succeed.

Great newsletters simply remind them those opportunities already exist.

Communication isn't about sending more information. It's about making your value impossible to overlook.
